Doutorada em Sociologia especialidade de Demografia pela Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH-UNL), em 2004. Mestrado em Demografia, FCSH-UNL em 1997. Licenciatura em Estatística e Gestão da Informação, Instituto Superior de Estatística e Gestão de Informação (ISEGI/UNL), em 1992. Tem utilizado as abordagens multivariadas para explorar dinâmicas demográficas e desenvolvido trabalhos sobre a fecundidade, contraceção, mortalidade e migrações.

António Costa e Silva

Is Professor at IST-UL and CEO of PARTEX Oil and Gas. He got a BA in Mining Engineering from IST-UL, a MA in Oil Engineering from the Imperial College and a PhD from the Imperial College and from the IST – UL. He also got his Habilitation from IST-UL, where he belongs to the Faculty. He initiated his professional carrier at Sonangol in Angola in 1980. He worked at the Companhia Portuguesa de Serviços (1984-1997) and was executive director of Compagnie Générale de Geophysique (1998-2001). In 2002 he was appointed by the International Court of the Chamber of Commerce of Stockholm as international expert to solve the dispute between two major oil companies at a Sea of China field. From 2001 to 2003 he worked at the French Oil Institute (IFP) in Paris, on its corporation branch (BEICIP-FRANLAB), as Director of Reservoir Engineering and Director of Operations.

Bruno Cardoso Reis

Is a Researcher at ICS (Lisbon University), Invited Professor at ISCTE-IUL and associate Researcher at the King's College. He got a BA in History from the University of Lisbon, a MA in Historical Studies from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in War Studies from the King's College. He also lectures at the Nova Lisbon University and collaborates with the CEHR of the Catholic University. He belongs to the International Studies Association, the British International Studies Association and the London Institute for International and Strategic Studies. He published extensively on history and international relations. His work Salazar e o Vaticano (Lisboa : ICS, 2007) received the Book Prizes Vítor de Sá and Aristides de Sousa Mendes. His current fields of interest include history and theory of international relations, colonialism and decolonization, strategy and non-conventional conflicts, foreign and defence policy, religions and international security.

Robert Kappel



Is President Emeritus and Senior Researcher of the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA) – he chaired GIGA (2004-2011). He has studied economics and sociology at the University of Freiburg and received his PhD and habilitation from the University of Bremen. He was associate professor at the University of Bremen (1989-1996), and professor at the University of Leipzig (1996-2004) and the University of Hamburg (2004-2011). His research activities focus mainly on global power shifts, development economics and African economies, and German foreign policy. He has an extensive list of publications, among which “On the Economics of Regional Powers: Comparing China, India, Brazil, and South Africa (GIGA Working Paper Series 145, 2010) and with Juliane Brach “Trade, Hierarchy, and Cooperation in the Age of Globalization, (GIGA Working Paper Series 95, 2009).

Luís Amado

Is currently Chairman of the board of BANIF and Chairman of the project Lisbon Conferences. Since the 1990s he held several positions in the Portuguese Government, including Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (1995-1997 and 1999-2002), Minister of Defence (2005-2006) and Minister of State and Foreign Affairs (2006-2011). As part of his political activity, he was representative at the Regional Assembly of Madeira and member of the Portuguese Parliament. He graduated in Economics at the Technical University of Lisbon. Luis Amado was international consultant, adviser to the National Defence Institute and Visiting Professor at Georgetown University. He is also Visiting Professor at the Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas (ISCSP) and at the Faculty of Economics in the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

José Manuel Delgado Félix Ribeiro

Is Assistant Fellow of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and of IPRI, the Portuguese Institute of International Relations. He got a BA in Economics at ISCEF in 1971 and a PhD in International Relations at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Lisbon Nova University in 2012. He worked in several government units of studies, prospective and planning from 1973 to 2012, including the Group of Basic Studies of Industrial Economics, the Service of Studies and Planning of the National Unit of Scientific and Technological Research and the Department of Prospective and Planning where he was Deputy-General Director from 1995 to 2006, being responsible for International Information and Prospective issues. He has conducted several studies and published a number of articles on international economics, prospective studies and development strategies

Francisco Seixas da Costa

Is non-executive Member of the Board of Jerónimo Martins SGPS and of Mota Engil Africa NV and consultant of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He was Ambassador at UN, OSCE, UNESCO, Brazil and France. He was Secretary of State for European Affairs (1995-2001) and Executive Director of the North-South Centre (2013-2014). Since 2013 he is member of the Consultative Council of the School of Economic (University of Coimbra) and of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (Lisbon Nova University). He lectures at University Autónoma of Lisbon and belongs to the Scientific Council of Política Internacional and of Janus - Journal of International Relations. He authored a number of books and articles on international relations and security and he is columnist in two daily newspapers. He got a BA on Political and Social Sciences from the Technical University of Lisbon.

Fernando Jorge Cardoso

Is Head of strategic and development studies of the Instituto Marquês de Valle Flôr. He is also Invited Professsor at ISCTE-IUL and Executive chair of the Lisbon Conferences. He received his PhD and Habilitations from ISEG, Technical University of Lisbon. In Mozambique he was Dean of the School of Economics of the Eduardo Mondlane University (1978-1983), Assistant to the Minister of Planning (1977-1983) and CEO of Maragra, a sugar company (1983-1985). In Portugal he has conducted since 1991 research, education and management activities in several university institutions. He was head of the Africa Programme of the Institute for Strategic and International Studies (1991-2012). He was consultant on the elaboration/evaluation of aid programmes in Angola, Mozambique and Cape Verde. He was copresidente of the Organising Committee of the 2009 and 2011 Estoril Conferences. He has an extensive list of publications on African, Development and International Relations.

Chris Alden



Is Professor of International Relations, at the London School of Economics and Senior Research Associate with the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) in Johannesburg.  He taught International Relations at the University of the Witwatersrand from 1990 to 2000 and established the East Asia Project in 1992. He has held fellowships at Cambridge University, Tokyo University and University of Pretoria, among others. He has published extensively on Africa-Asia relations, South African foreign policy and post-conflict issues. More recently he has focused his research and expertise on the China-Africa relations – one of his more renowned publications on this issue is 'China in Africa' (Zed 2007).


 

Ana Alexandrino da Silva



Licenciou-se em Matemática Aplicada à Economia e Gestão na Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (ISEG) e fez mestrado em Estatística e Gestão de Informação na Universidade Nova de Lisboa (ISEGI). É autora de “Gráficos e mapas, representação de informação estatística” (LIDEL, 2006), único livro em português sobre a temática da visualização de informação estatística. Após 11 anos como quadro técnico do Instituto Nacional de Estatística, ingressou há 6 anos como analista de políticas públicas no Observatório do QREN, um dos três organismos que deram origem à Agência para o Desenvolvimento e Coesão, onde presentemente se encontra. Já fez consultoria técnica em vários organismos públicos e privados e deu formação especializada para públicos muito diversos (Univ. Federal da Bahia (Brasil), ICS-UL, INE, GPP do Min. Agric. e Mar, Centro de Sondagens da Univ. Católica LUSA, etc. Participa com frequência em conferências e seminários da especialidade. Is Professor of Geopolitics in Latin-America at the Paris School of International Affairs of Sciences Po Paris. He has a PhD in Political Sciences (Sciences Po Paris). He presides over the Advisory Board of the EU-Brazil Association (Brussels). Member of the Board of Trustees of UNITAR; member of the Committee of Rencontres Internationales de Genève. Director of the Latin-America Research Chair at the Centre d’Etudes Sociales, Economiques et Managériales (HEM, Rabat – Morocco). Member of the Advisory Council of Janus.net, Portugal. Journalist, columnist for Radio France International (Brazilian Service). Former director (1999-2010) of the Mercosur Chair of Sciences Po and former coordinator of the Working Group on EU-Mercosur Negotiations and of the International Conference of Forte Copacabana on “EuropeanSouth American Dialogue on Defense and Security”. He has published extensively – 7 books and a number of articles in academic journals and of chapters in books.

Coronel de Artilharia do Exército Português. Mestre e Licenciado em Ciências Militares, possui o Curso de Estado-Maior do Instituto de Altos Estudos Militares onde também foi professor. Foi Assessor Militar da Casa Militar do Presidente da República (2001-2004). Auditor e conferencista do Curso de Defesa Nacional do Instituto da Defesa Nacional (IDN). Assessor e investigador do IDN nas áreas da gestão de crises, África Subsariana, reconstrução dos Estados e da reforma do setor de segurança (delegado desde 2011 no Executive Academic Board /Security Sector Reform, European Security and Defense College). Tem diversos artigos e capítulos publicados e co-coordenou o livro, editado pelo IDN e pela INCM, “A Prevenção e a Resolução de Conflitos em África”.
